Count Chocula

General Mills created Count Chocula in 1971.[1] He is the mascot for the cereal Count Chocula. The cereal consists of chocolate bits mixed with marshmallows. Count Chocula became the first of several monster cereal mascots. The other mascots from General Mills monster cereals are the famous Franken Berry, Boo Berry, Fruit Brute, and Yummy Mummy.[2]

Evolution

When Count Chocula was first introduced he was quite a bit different than he is today. His original look made it seem like he was a star in the Rocky and Bullwinkle series. As time continued forward Count Chocula’s facial features became more dramatic. The Count’s nose and ears grew extensively larger. Through the years he started partially scary and transformed into a more lovable and caring mascot for General Mills. Most of the cereal box pictures can be found here.[3]

Controversy

A box of Count Chocula cereal featured an image of Dracula, played by Bela Lugosi. Dracula had a necklace on that had a charm that looked like the Star of David.[1] Jewish groups took offense to this, and caused the charm to be removed from the box. Due to this controversy, the cereal box with the charm on it has become a collector’s item.[1]

Memorabilia

There are many different things that can be bought from Amazon.com dealing with Count Chocula [4] . Someone can become a proud owner of a Count Chocula bobble head doll. If it is Halloween people can be seen supporting Count Chocula cereal in their Count Chocula costume. People can also support Count Chocula by wearing one of many different kinds of T-shirts. Plush dolls are also available to purchase. As stated in the Controversy section, cereal boxes are also for sale as future collectible items. Count Chocula even appears on a guitar.

Sales

From the debut of Count Chocula cereal, and the other monster cereals, sales were very high throughout the 1970’s.[3] In the start of the 1980’s the previously successful cereal sales started to drop dramatically. The monster cereal crew was broken apart when Fruit Brute was discontinued in 1983. [3] At the end of the 1980’s Count Chocula was completely restyled, which brought forth a new coming of Count Chocula cereal. [3] Count Chocula was the head of the monster cereals and continues to be the most famous.

Trivia
